Traductor automático Systran

SYSTRAN is an automatic translation system that was created by Peter Toma in 1970. Firstly, Toma developed in the Georgetown University a system, that he continued developing during years until he cretaed the final SYSTRAN. He was also the chosen to translate it from English to Russian for the American Army.

Later, the NASA proved the system in one of its projects, and although it did not give good results, this experience give more importance to SYSTRAN. After becoming famous, the EC asked to Peter Toma for a demonstration in English/French. After that demo the EC was satisfied. In 1976,SYSTRAN was bought by the Comision and developed later.

It was thw bureaucrat Loll Rolling who introduced the automatic translation in the European Comision because he obtained the license for using SYSTRAN. Consequently, the system dictionaries are full of terminology about the Comunity. Now, the CE system has 17 pairs of languages which have been added in a linguistic services local net. Nowadays, translations are processed at a speed of 500,000 words per hour.

Let’s see how it works:

In a few weeks, parliament is scheduled to begin debate on a hotly contested law that would go further: banning ceremonies at Franco’s grave and giving greater recognition to his victims. The basilica would become, in the words of one official, just a church with Franco in the basement.

Spaniards, with the support of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his 2-year-old socialist government, are examining the brutalities of the dictatorship and giving a voice to its long-ignored victims — men and women who fought to defend the elected leftist government that Franco ousted and who then worked clandestinely (and fruitlessly) to undermine the generalisimo. Tens of thousands were killed, imprisoned or sent into long exile.

Errors in translation

1. GRAMMATICAL ERRORS:
-“Debate”. The system translates it as “el discusión” and in Spanish that word is feminine, so the correct article should be “la discusión”, even though the best way to translate the original word would be just “debate”.

– Another error would be “hotly contested law”. The translator translates it as “una ley caliente disputada” and this makes no sense in Spanish. The most logical way to translate it would be “una ley muy controvertida”.

– Furthermore, “el basilica” is also an error because the system, once agais has completely mistaken the genre of the Spanish word. The correct way to say it is “la basilica”.

– “In the words of one official” is translated by systran as “en las palabras de un oficial”, which is literal and looses it’s meaning. It should be “en palabras de un representante del gobierno”.

-In addition, there is a very important grammatical error, which is “long-ignored victims”. The authomatic translator translates it literally as “largo no hechas caso” and this is imposible to be understood in Spanish. It should be “ignoradas durante mucho tiempo”.

2. LEXICAL ERRORS:
-“In a few weeks”. The authomatic translator says “en algunas semanas” and, in this context it is not completely correct, because it sounds too literal. It would be better to translate it as “en unas pocas semanas”.

-The systran translator has translated “…of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his 2-year-old socialist government” as “…primer ministro Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero y su gobierno socialista de 2 años” and it is absolutely wrong because of two reasons. On the one hand, although in English they differ between “prime minister” and “president”, in Spanish it is always used the word “president”. On the other hand “de 2 años”, sounds quite ambiguous in Spanish. In conclusion, the correct way to translate it into Spanish would be “…presidente José Luís Rodríguez Zapatero, y su gobierno socialista desde hace dos años”.

-Another example, would be “fruitessly” which has not been translated maybe because it is not a very common word in Spanish. Anyway, it should have been translated as “infructuosamente”.

3. VERBAL ERRORS:
– “Is scheduled to begin”, should be translated as “tiene previsto comenzar” and not “programar comenzar” as the systran translates it, because in Spanish the infinitive of two verbs cannot be written together.
